What Key keeps, and why

Your account

To use Key you make an account with your email address and a password. We keep your email address, your password in a scrambled form that cannot be turned back into the password, your time zone, and when you signed up and last used Key. We email you a code to confirm the address is yours, and again if you reset your password.

Your computer

When Key is installed it is given its own identity on our server. We keep the version of Key and of Windows it reports, which account is signed in on it, and a scrambled form of your computer's Windows ID — used to count the free daily messages per computer as well as per account. We also keep the names of the tools Key has, such as "open an app"; nothing about you is in those.

What you ask Key, and what it does

Key does its work on your computer: it opens apps, presses buttons and reads files there. To decide each step, Key sends your request to Key's server together with what that step needs — which can include text Key read on your screen or in your files for that job. The server sends this to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, which answers.

We keep:

• what you asked Key, in your own words
• what Key answered
• every request our server sent to the AI model, in full, and what came back
• how each job ended — finished, failed, or stopped to ask you — which tools were used, and which steps went wrong
• anything you write to us through "Report a problem" in Key's settings, together with what Key's island was showing at that moment — its words, never a picture

Pictures of your screen

When Key needs to look at your screen, that one picture goes to Key's server, is read, and is deleted straight away. Pictures are never stored. What Key asked about the picture is kept, with the other requests above.

Your voice

When you speak to Key, the sound goes through Key's server to our speech provider, Fish Audio, to be turned into words, and Key's spoken replies are made there too. We keep how much was sent and received, not the sound itself. The words you said are kept like anything else you ask Key.

When something goes wrong

When something goes wrong in Key on your computer — an error while it works, the island breaking, Key not starting — Key sends us a report of it by itself: what went wrong, the technical details of where in Key it happened, the versions of Key and Windows, and which of your requests it belonged to. Those details can include names of files or folders on your computer. We keep these reports.

Key also writes down on your computer what it did, step by step. If something goes wrong we can ask Key to send us those log files; Key sends them by itself the next time it checks in, and we keep them.

Payments

Paid plans are bought through PayPal. You pay on PayPal's own page, and we never see your card or bank details. We keep which plan you bought, the amount, the date, PayPal's order number, and whether the payment went through.

Who can see it

Everything on this page is kept on Key's server. The people who run Key can see it, and use it to run Key, to count your messages, and to find and fix what goes wrong. Besides Anthropic, Fish Audio and PayPal as described above, emails to you are sent through a mail service.

How long it is kept

Everything on this page, except pictures of your screen, is kept for as long as Key runs. Accounts, and what is kept about them, are not deleted.

Changes

If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it.
